This week Portraits of Edmonton is proud to feature local denim company Arturo Denim Co. Owned and operated by Cinder and Smoke's Janna Stewart and partner James Stewart, Arturo Denim Co. makes custom fit jeans right here in Canada. The Stewarts launched their company at the Royal Bison in late 2016 and opened up their own store front on 124th Street shortly after. I was lucky enough to capture the transformation of the store from bare bones to the beautiful store it is today. If you're looking for the perfect pair of jeans and a place to shop local, you won't be disappointed with Arturo Denim Co,

Where did the idea for Arturo Denim company come from?

James was touring with his band, Slates in Australia and visited a tiny jean store that handmade blue jeans in the shop and had a retail space as well. He brought the idea home and we thought, 'hey maybe we can do that?' and a couple years later, Arturo Denim Co. was born. We liked the idea of making jeans in Canada, for both men and women and also having the ability to offer alternations to our customers. Jeans can be notoriously difficult to shop for and we liked the idea of taking the pain out of denim shopping.

How are your jeans made?

We do all the designing, pattern making, sample sewing and jean testing in our studio. We are working with a company out of Quebec that is currently doing all of the sewing of our jeans until we are able to take on more the of manufacturing in-house, which we hope will happen summer of 2017. Currently we are using raw, Japanese made denim, really nice high quality stuff. We have kept the design and style very classic, no bells or whistles or glitter or fades. By removing chemical washes from the production of your jeans (this how you take indigo denim and make it lighter, faded) you start with a strong fabric that will wear better and ultimately last longer. We also don't use any animal products on our jeans, making them a vegan-friendly option.

What services do you provide at your shop?

We love it when our jeans fit you perfectly right off the shelf but when they don't we offer any and every alteration to make them fit you just as you want them. This includes hemming, leg tapering, waistband alterations - whatever we can do, we will. And alterations are always free! We also offer patch sewing - buy one of ours or bring yours in along with your denim jacket and we will sew it on for you. Repairs will soon be offered to both Arturo Denim jeans as well as other brands you may need to have stitched up.

What are your plans for the future of the company?

We have lots of big plans for the company this year! New styles and colours of denim coming this spring and early summer, denim jackets and cotton button-up shirts. We are also bringing in some cool stuff from other designers, things like tote bags, belts, shirts and sweaters. We really love hearing from our customers and finding out what they want in their jeans. And because we have our own studio workspace attached to our shop we are able to do smaller runs of pieces and bring in new colours of denim regularly. It makes us happy to see you walk out our doors in your new favourite Arturo Denim Co. jeans.
