POE BUSINESS: FLANNEL FOXES

I first came across Flannel Foxes when I was browsing through the local goods for sale at the Royal Bison. I immediately fell in love with their designs and snatched up a pennant right away. Beyond pennants that pay homage to Edmonton, Flannel Foxes also creates apparel inspired by western Canada. After all, west Canada is the best Canada (in my opinion). Their apparel is perfect for both men and women who love to get outdoors and explore or who like to spend their weekends around a campfire.

Flannel Foxes is owned and operated by Meagan Henderson, Brittni Goshulak, and Mike Lundy. What started as a blog has blossomed into a unique apparel company that fits right in in Edmonton. Beyond art and craft fairs, Flannel Foxes can be found in some local shops or via their website. Be sure to check them out!

How did the three of you meet?

Brit and I (Meg) met on the yellow school bus in high school. We both grew up on an acreage so we had no choice but to take the yellow school bus with all the elementary kids all through our high school years. Needless to say, we bonded pretty fast. Mike was a hair client of Brit's, but they actually started dating after we ran into him at Sasquatch Music Festival in 2013.

Do you each have specific roles within the company?

Yes, absolutely! Mike is our design guy. He does all the graphics, logos & website design - he makes us look good! Brit is the organizational guru. She keeps track of everything from orders to stores to stock. Myself, I'm the saleswoman. I handle all emails, pitches, social media & legwork from store to store across Western Canada.

How did the evolution from blog to apparel line come about?

Honestly we fell into blogging by complete accident, and after a few years we realized it just wasn't what we really wanted to be doing. We designed a few shirts to support the blog and after getting a good response selling them at a market, we decided to jump right into the clothing world . Transitioning from blog to business was the first time we really felt like we had a direction for what we wanted Flannel Foxes to be, and we haven't looked back since.

How would you describe the Flannel Foxes brand?

Flannel Foxes is a nostalgic brand inspired by life in the Canadian West. We take inspiration from our home and native land to bring you high quality, well designed, practical clothing. The Flannel Foxes line is designed to compliment the Western Canadian lifestyle - made to be just as comfortable hanging by a campfire as living it up downtown. Our unisex shirts and sweatshirts are made in Canada. We believe that West Canada is Best Canada and want to share that, no matter where you live!

How does Edmonton and Alberta inspire your apparel designs?

We are inspired by our childhood memories of growing up in West Canada, the antique mall, and vintage photos from the Alberta archives.

Where do you sell your apparel?

We're in stores in Calgary, North Vancouver and Revelstoke. In Edmonton you'll find us at Little Brick, Homestead, Tix on the Square and The Maker's Keep. We also sell online & partake in the occasional popup shop/market as well!

You seem to love the outdoors. Where are your favourite places to get outside and explore?

We love exploring right here in Edmonton. We enjoy hanging out in the River Valley- it feels like we're not even in the city! And of course we have a soft spot for the Rocky Mountains.

As small business owners, do you have any advice for other Edmontonians looking to start their own business?

We think what has helped us the most is collaborating with other small businesses. When you can help each other, its a win-win! The Edmonton community is so supportive and wonderful, one of the many reasons we love living here.

Thank you to Flannel Foxes for taking the time to be part of POE. Head over to their Instagram and Twitter and give them a follow. Be sure to visit their website and shop all of their killer apparel here.
